I was introduced to yoga by Dr Peter Yates at Parkdale Yoga Centre, Wolverhampton in 2009, with whom I trained at The School of Heart Yoga and gained a 500 hour Certification. Pete is a breath of fresh air in that he pointed the way rather than telling me what to do, I absorbed so much from his wise insights. In 2001 I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts - First Class Honours from the University of Wolverhampton. At that time I had Careers as a Visiting Lecturer in Art at Wolverhampton University and as an Art Tutor at WAES teaching on a Foundation Art Course. I was also working as a Freelance Artist alongside being a mother to three young boys.
During my MA studies in Art at Birmingham University I began to explore in depth the many oppositions that we often encounter in life: inner/outer, mind/body, etc. I was interested in opening up these binaries, as a means to explore the possibility of an edge, or a place that’s in-between, as a way to come to see things differently. Over time questions I had been exploring such as ‘what am I’? changed to ‘who and what are we’?
After graduating with a Master of Arts Distinction I began creating in collaboration with my husband Dave small, quiet, site specific, liminal, meditative spaces. Places that encouraged people to slow down, to stop and stare, at the everyday, to experience it in a fresh and different way, something that we don’t get much chance to do in this fast paced world. This was an invitation to encounter the extraordinary in the ordinary, and to experience being fully immersed in a space where the outside and the inside merged together as one.
So when I began yoga, which means ‘Unity’ which translates into the union of mind/body, soft/hard etc. I was already familiar with this aspect of yoga through self enquiry from my art. This was the beginning of a merging together between my art & yoga practice and teaching.
In 2022 I attended a ‘Sexuality, Spirituality and Non duality’ course and also an ‘Embodied Resilience Presenter Teacher Training’ course with Godfrey Devereux and Olivia Crooks. In 2020 I attended an online ‘Humanist Yoga course’ with Peter Blackaby. I have also trained with Debbie Farrah in ‘Therapeutic Yoga’. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to absorb so much insight from all of these inspiring yoga teachers. I have attended classes with Simon Hunt whose wisdom, love and compassion in sharing yoga has lifted me out of some dark spaces we are bound to encounter in life, and bought back the light, for which I am deeply grateful.
Having moved from Wolverhampton in 2017 I now live in Dyffryn Ardudwy on the beautiful Welsh Coast where Dave is in the process of completing the renovation of our home with a stunning Yoga & Art Room, which my son Matt who is an exceptional architect has beautifully designed, ready for future ‘Sun Moon Yoga & Art Retreats’.
Dave is an exceptionally talented builder and I am deeply grateful for all his generosity and support, without which much of my creative ideas would not have come to life.
